Position Summary

The Division of Earth and Ecosystem Science at the Desert Research Institute (DRI) seeks an Assistant Research Scientist, Archaeologist to be located in Las Vegas, NV. This position involves development and implementation of applied cultural resource research projects in collaboration with other DRI faculty. Ongoing tasks include (but are not limited to) performance of various field and laboratory archaeological research activities, report preparation, development and pursuit of applied research proposals, positive interactions with clients and sponsors, and presentation of research to professional, agency, and public audiences. The successful applicant will work on existing archaeological projects in the Great Basin and Mojave Desert, primarily in southern Nevada, under PI supervision. In addition, the applicant will assist in the pursuit of additional research contracts and grant opportunities to support his/her salary.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Participation in cultural resource survey, monitoring, site recording and evaluation, excavation, and other cultural resource data recovery efforts for diverse types of cultural resources (prehistoric, historic, and Cold War);
  • Archaeological and historic analysis of artifacts, sites, structures, and buildings;
  • Preparation of technical cultural resource reports, forms and other documents in compliance with grant/contract requirements;
  • Interaction with American Indians regarding cultural resource projects and results;
  • Conducting artifact collection curation tasks and management of archival records;
  • Effective communication with Pls and agency clients/sponsors, particularly in the Department of Energy;
  • Participating in proposal development activities.

Required Qualifications
  • Masters degree in anthropology or closely-related discipline with an emphasis in archaeology from an accredited institution;
  • Minimum of two years prior field/lab experience focusing on archaeology in the Great Basin/Mojave Desert;
  • Experience with ArcMap, Word and Excel;
  • Demonstrated experience in timely completion of technical cultural resource reports and other documents related to contract-driven applied archaeological research;
  • Demonstrated experience in curation activities and archival records management.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior archaeological experience in controlled Department of Defense or Department of Energy facilities;
    Experience working with 20th century military and/or Cold War cultural resources;
  • Working understanding of federal and state historic preservation laws including Section 106 requirements and processes
  • Experience in Native American cultural resources planning and analysis
Conditions of Employment / Physical Requirements
  • US Citizenship is required and the ability to obtain a security clearance is mandatory
  • The incumbent will be required to travel extensively for field projects throughout the southwestern United States. Must have the ability and willingness to work in inclement weather conditions for extended periods, lift heavy equipment and samples (50 lbs.), and walk for many miles per day.
