Position Summary

The Desert Research Institute’s (DRI’s) Division of Hydrologic Sciences in Reno is seeking an innovative individual with well-rounded experience in web applications development. The successful candidate will join a small interdisciplinary team dedicated to developing and maintaining all aspects of a real-time environmental data monitoring system, including sensor deployment, telemetry and data streaming solutions, developing manual and automated data analysis tools, and delivering easy to use web-based visualization of real-time and historical data. The successful candidate will utilize solutions-oriented thinking to develop secure and robust solutions as they contribute to the development, testing, and on-going maintenance of web-based data manipulation and visualization tools.

The successful candidate will primarily work on frontend solutions but will be expected to cross-train, contribute to, and support the duties of other team members based on candidate’s skills and interests. The candidate will also be encouraged to assist other DRI Faculty who encompass a broad range of scientific research.

Required Qualifications
  • US citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Computer Science or closely related field plus at least three (3) years of relevant programming experience.
  • At least three (3) years of experience with client-side JavaScript programming.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing web based or web enabled applications using advanced JavaScript programming techniques and JavaScript-based frontend frameworks (such as Angular, React, or Bootstrap).
  • Fluency with HTML and CSS.
  • A self-directed team player with strong organizational and time management skills that thrives in a continually challenging environment.
  • Proven ability to independently learn new skills and technologies and to keep abreast of new advances.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to professionally communicate with peers, DRI Faculty, staff, and clients.
Preferred Qualifications

Greater consideration will be given to those who possess the following skills and attributes:

  • Experience in handling, processing, or displaying dynamic, real-time environmental data.
  • Demonstrated ability to program in one or more backend languages including either PHP and/or Python.
  • Strong understanding of web application security practices.
  • Experience in the use of online mapping APIs such as ArcGIS for JavaScript or Google Maps.
  • Knowledge of charting APIs, such as D3.js or Dygraphs.
  • Working knowledge of backend MVC frameworks, such as Yii2 or Django.
  • Working knowledge of relational SQL database systems.
  • Experience developing mobile applications.
